Letter from King Hyejong for the Crown Prince Lee Hwi

I Want You To Live

By the time you are reading this letter, the palace will be in an uproar.

As I knew you would not want this, I could not tell you in advance.
Even to the end, I remain a father who denied your wishes.
I thought this would be better than losing you forever.
As long as I can keep you safe,
I will gladly put up with any resentment you have for me.
I was against appointing you as the Crown Prince for this very reason.
However, I was wrong to worry about you.
You were much stronger than I thought.
That is why it was more painful and I was tormented even more.
To me, seeing you was the hardest thing in this world.
If you could…
“If it were not for the late King’s order, could things have been different?
I would like to ask you that.”

I regretted the decision I made that day for a very long time.
Therefore…
I will not repeat the same mistake.
Yi Hwi. It was your brother’s name.
But to me, it is now your name.
You were the Crown Prince of Joseon.
And you were my only daughter.
I just want you to live.
And I hope to never hear from you.
